Shopping, with a side of child abuse

Yesterday I had to do a bit of shopping. This meant: thrift store, shoe store, Wal Mart. It was a Saturday morning in Suffolk, VA and every store I entered had a mother doing the yank and yell to a very small child. Different mother, different store, same old story.

It makes me wonder just how far a person can go with a kid before someone steps in and stops them. I’m sure you can yell and yank. I’m also sure a person can smack a kid’s bottom and even face, in public, without repercussions. Where would you step in? Where would I step in? What are the variables that play into our decision to offer assistance or perspective or knowledge that someone sees what’s happening and believes it to be wrong?
I’m not sure I know the answers, even for myself.
