Ants Don’t Like Lavender

At least, it seems that they don’t. When we planted our new planter boxes, we filled them with composted cow manure from our back pasture and it was full of ants. I did these two things:

>sprinkled them with used coffee grounds
>sprinkled them with crushed, dried lavender leaves from a plant that had held onto the leaves since last fall.
The ants appear to be gone. I am not sure if it was the coffee or the lavender or the combination but either way, it seems to have worked. We have a severe ant infestation here. In summer there is an anthill about every 6-10 inches in our yard. Too many. They come into the house, despite my best efforts to keep a clean kitchen. I mean, the trash can has trash in it and ants. The compost bucket is a magnet as is any crumb left uncleaned. I do not like this at all.
We sprinkle DE around the base of our trash can, and it helps but I think lavender would smell much better. Maybe I can make a lavender-scented DE concoction…
