Willow Defoliation, Any Ideas Why?

There is a beautiful willow tree growing right beside our fence in the back yard. There is a ditch just beside it that stays damp most of the time and the willow has been a beautiful part of our lives for the last several years. M spends a lot of time climbing it. It has always been healthy but suddenly, the leaves on one side of the tree are dying and I don’t know why.

I did a bit of research on willow tree disease and pest predators and the damage does not look anything like any of the things I’ve found on the internet. The leaves are the only thing dying, the twigs are green and the branches look healthy. The dead parts are only on the southern side of the tree. There are a very few, small branches with dying leaves on the northern side but for the most part, this side seems healthy.

Here are some photos. I will call our extension agent tomorrow and ask her to come and have a look but your thoughts would be appreciated as well.
