482 Photographs of Europe

My gorgeous son is back from his trip. He studied in Florence but took trips to Rome, Interlaken, Amsterdam, Munich and Brugge. He looks wonderful but then, he always looks wonderful. Sometimes I feel like a Randall groupie…a groupie who can always get backstage because I’m his mom.
Canyoning in Interlaken sounds like on of the most fabulous experiences he had along the way. They went whitewater rafting for 3 hours and then, he said, they dressed in full wet suits, life jackets and helmets and took a bus: 1 hour, straight up. They repelled down a sheer rock face, jumped off a waterfall, climbed and hiked and zip lined. Sounds like an adrenaline pumping blast! He and his buddies each had a limit to how much they could spend at the casino there, for 2 of them it was $10. Randall had a rum and coke and gambled his $5 or so. His buddy had a $9 beer and blew his buck. I guess that I don’t need to worry about any of his father’s addictive traits coming out with regards to gambling!
He said they did Rome in a day and that one day is all he’ll ever need to spend in Rome. He likes it and, like me, feels some weird connection to the Forum, but he has no desire to submerge himself in the culture of Roma.
Amsterdam…he took some great photos, went to the Van Gogh Museum, the Rembrandt Museum and the Rijksmuseum. They enjoyed the cooler weather there and a great hotel.
The whole of Munich exists inside a beer garden.
Brugge just happened to be in the throws of a great music festival. Randall is a musician and thus was in heaven when he heard the African drumbeats drawing him toward a park in downtown Brugge.
There were three young men traveling together. They stayed at hostels and only booked one day in advance. Try here if you’re interested.
I’m glad he’s home. I missed him but am also thrilled that he had this experience of mind and world-enlarging adventure.
Oh, you won’t be seeing any of those 482 photographs he took and uploaded onto my computer because, thanks to Hughes Satellite, our connection sucks and we can’t upload photos to the net.
